WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED
That old man had built his old log home
A good twenty odd years ago so to say
Away out in the outback living alone
He was a stockman in his working day

He'd had the local shop bring his food
And a few cartons of of beer as well
His tobacco for his old pipe other needs
There was a that ran not far away to tell

The local shop some forty miles dirt road
Would pick up his pension whenever due
Paying for his list of anything he needed
Now going on eighty years or maybe two

Once in a blue moon an old mate'd drop by
They'd sit outside have a yarn of back when
A few beers home made bread he'd make
Ha'ntt seen him for awhile since bck when

He had an old chair out front where he'd sit
But often sat a a bid old flat rock there too
Had an old dog for company both good mates
Under a makeshift veranda far from being new

Was always broke paying for his list of supplies
Nothig was cheap away out there but that's life
Kept his stove wood out there under veranda dry
Had a party line as a phone in case of any strife

His old mate came out one day brought grand kids
All the noise the area was somewhat in shock
Got hold of an old axe no good for use anymore
And they end up splitting in half that old rock

Well who'd have guessed that rock'd been there
Almost as long as his memory and he was old
Low and behold looking at what was left of it
It was almost within full of oldest pure gold

He rang the local shop got a bloke to come out
That knew about this kind of thing an old miner
Well I'll be stuffed and dried he thus remarked
All gold and had been there as long as this old timer

Well endless in town as if helpers came out then
Asking him if there was anything they could do
To give him a hand in any possible way out there
Almost all of them in his life he never ever knew

They built him a would shed donated a chain saw
Said they'd call to see him every now and again
A few got in and they dug him a deep water well
As out there the stranger had always been rain

That old rock was worth a living fortune at best
A heap of them painted his home out and in
Gave him a big old rocking chait near the fire
Made him a good chicken yard eggs to win

Made him a decent bed table and chairs too
A few Fixed his old roof now water proof new
Who would have guessed a rock as old as time
What it was worth and just what it could do
