Passing Through

Oh the beer was running freely,
Our passing out celebration
Brave and stupid pledges made
Under the effects of inebriation,
So, I'm hanging here trembling
Halfway up this scrambling net
Sobriety is settling in and I think
This maybe just as far as I'll get.

But, this is a case of bravado,
A matter of my not losing face,
Do or die I've got to finish
Though I'll not win the race.
The non climbers down below
Are mouthing scorn and jeers
Which inspired me to finish and
Turn them all to hearty cheers.

Slowly and steadily
No attempt at going fast
And I didn't finish first
But I didn't finish last.
Arm in arm back to the billet
After our very silly little lark
Doing part of the assault course
While drunk, and in the dark.
