Shadows lengthen in gathering gloom,
As jackrabbits flee a coyote doom.
Lightning flares 'cross darkened sky
As great horned owl takes wing to fly.

Red rock of Sedona gleams a sullen shade
As hikers walk trails Sinagua once made.
Mountain lion prowl steep rocky slopes
As a gila monster slowly gropes.

Crumbling ruins of ancient abode,
Inhabited now only by a horned toad;
Wild javelinea roam the desert land,
While rattlesnakes lurk 'midst burning sand.

Whitetail deer roam forests of pine
Near a long abandoned copper mine.
Roadrunner hunts food, be it scorpion or snake,
As desert sun the basin does bake.

A land of extremes, often rugged and bleak,
From the Valley of the Sun to Kachina Peaks.
Around each new bend, stark beauty llies,
Here 'neath Arizona sunlit skies.
