Last Parade

You ask why I'm standing here
Very formally dressed
In Regimental Beret and Blazer
Commemorative medals on chest.
I'm here to remember
Old friends from the past
On this special parade which
I intend to be my very last.

I was never a fighting soldier,
Did my service in a different way,
But I'm  here to pay respect on
This special Remembrance Day
For those who gave life and health
Fighting for our country's cause
In those two great conflicts
And all those  following minor wars.

Ever since that Armistice Day we have
Been involved in some form of strife.
Almost every single year has passed
With loss in action of military life.
As the Last Post sounds
Around our City Square
I am so pleased I made
The effort to be there.

I think of that time,
Those service days long gone
I have now made my peace
I am ready to move on.
I feel so very emotional
As  the last notes fade
And I fall out from my last
Remembrance Sunday Parade..
