Good Farmer Jack

The narrow country road is barely
Changed from sixty years ago
Except the old village school
Where every child used to go
Is a house, not a school anymore
Andthe Field where we used to play
Is now the new village cemetry
The Old Churchyard long past its day

Homer House Farm is still there
And the memories flood back
Of the generous spirit
Of the Good Farmer Jack.
His tennis court overrun
By the every village kid
So this is what
Good Farmer Jack did.

Fenced off a field corner
Unploughed and over grown
Provided a roller and mower
Said now you make your own.
Just a few weeks
Good sunnmer weather
All the village kids
Working hard together.

Not exactly Wimbledon, but
Good enough for us to play
And all that summer it was used
Every fair weather day.
I don't know when it went
I grew up left and moved on
I only know after a few years
It was overgrown and gone
.
Just the corner of a normal field
Where Wind Turbines now stand
Their graceful towering presence
Bringing a modern use to the land
Good Farmer Jack's just a memory
But he brought so much pleasure
To all the village childen, gave them
A safe place for innocent leisure

Its not my village any more
But these days I find
It nestles there gently in
The recesses of my mind
In time all things change
Nothing much can realistically ever last
But it was a part of my childhood
My remembered and treasured past
