YOU DO NOT GROW OLD

the rise and fall of breathing

this morning
an even-ness
tells me you are alright

but what about tomorrow
and later on
tonight

who knows
how the future goes
and what's in store
keeping the surprise

I wear cautious eyes
lately
that's all you can see of me

I hold the days
and thoughts back
like a stemming of the tide
I dam them up
trying to
keep them alive
for the reliving

I return to the memories
that keep on giving
the sustainers

today
the world's dominated
by strife and whines
and the want-it-all and
want-it-back complainers
while some
barely hold on

we're holding on together now
rubber banded and band-aided
to the now and to our past

the growing noise and chaos outside
is something we try to keep at bay

maybe that's why I'm listening
so closely today
to the evenness in your breath

all  who you are is precious
wish I could strike the bargain too
to keep trouble and death
from knocking at the door of us
the best of two

you do not grow older in my eyes
you grow sweeter on the vine
the only bitter in age
and in the wine
is in how much longer the bottle will last.
