Cat's Cradle

Each night, we tread softly
among each other's dreams
and step careful round clouds
of our differing silences.

My daughter stirs to near waking
starts to speak in restless tongues.
Until her cat, effortless, slides to
haunch sit on her chest, as she sleeps.

Her black and white kneads, keeps watch. Alert
he peers, deeply searches my daughter's dreams.
Her kitten knits his cat's cradle, catches nightmare
mice. He calms my child and returns to his rest.
