The Legacy List

feel the good
it doesn't last
so you must savor it

like a piece of raspberry shortcake
with someone who's never tasted
raspberries

or a perfect night
listening to music on the front porch
when Stairway To Heaven
was number one

or when you heard a meow
and your heart leapt into your throat
and your cradled the smallest lost kitten

or when your eyes shyly met
green eyes that were filled with moonlight
and you felt stars
sliding down your spine
then out your fingertips

or when you felt that far off deep blue stare
and knew your Father was reading the whole book
of your heart for the last time

or as you found her on the gurney
the echoes of her laughter still in your head
as the freckles faded on her face

this is your life
all the moment's you've held onto
and shoulders you've embraced

even the ones who didn't stay
made paintings of your thoughts
their colors fading but still
remain  within the gallery of remembrance

the times you were certain you couldn't do
or move another step
and yet you gathered yourself up
into a stubborn fist

you've added so much to your list
haven't you
nice pictures to take with you
so you'll have company

more than enough for you to remember
and to be remembered.
