At the Sound of Harp and Lyre

In the Bible we read of a hoary king
Nebuchadnezzar was his name,
a man who learned a lesson hard
when enlightened he became.

He made a golden image
sixty cubits wide and high
and commanded subjects near and far
to worship it or die.

That they must gather to it
at the sound of the harp and lyre,
or find themselves held in contempt
and cast into the fire.

But three Jews brought from Babylon,
quite dissenting and headstrong
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
chose not to go along.

Thus, the king was ripe with anger
and decreed their lives must end
in the flames of an inferno,
alone and without a friend.

But inside that fiery furnace
there was no cause for alarm,
for the Lord had sent an angel down
to deliver them from harm.

Therefore, the three came out unscathed;
not one of them was burned,
Which changed the heart of a hoary king
for the lesson he had learned.
