Home Baked Bread

Granny Barker's home made bread
A big warm crusty doorstep wedge
Slathered with melting farm butter
Spread thickly from edge to edge
Covered in sweet strawberry jam
Sliced in two for me to eat
For this hungry lad
An after school treat.

Stern old Granny Barker
In her old rocking chair
In my memory now
She's always sitting there
Stern Old Granny Barker with
Her nine tailled leather strap
Good behaviour restored with
Just the threat of its sharp slap.

Sitting in that chair
Taking a gentle rock
To the loud ticking of
The old Grandfather clock.
So stern in her photograph
But that photo tells a little lie
For Granny Barker often had
Such a little twinkle in her eye.

Granny and Grandad Barker
So long ago dead and gone
But in a corner of my mind
Both of them are living on.
Great Granny's home baked bread
To this day never ever beaten
In my memory it's still
The finest loaf I've ever eaten.
