Poetic Verses

Before I Must Depart

If someone came and said to you
This day will be your last
Would you make things right before the Lord
Or die with a sinful past?

Would you summon your dearest loved ones
To tell them all goodbye
Or keep your secret from them
Though your leaving would be nigh?

Would you strive to grant forgiveness
From those who did you wrong
And therein find the peace of mind
You've needed for so long?

And would you be as eager
To seek pardon as well
Or hold fast to your bitterness
Not thinking they could tell?

These are deep and troubling questions
Most of us will face in time
And the way that we respond to them
Our character will define.

So, I hope that I'll be willing
To purpose in my heart
And mend my fences while I can
Before I must depart.
