Odd Things, Odd Thing.....

odd things comfort me
like
the growl of distant thunder
a full golden moon dancing
the talking of the night wind
the thrashing of branches
a sudden crack of lightning
and the knowledge
I'm hiding in the velvet of
darkness

I've always been hiding

I've had a distant yardstick
held before me
as I flinched
a rotted carrot dangling

I know a language
of diminishment
and words which would bury

I don't like close places
I don't like many people close to me
at times
I haven't liked eyes
especially when they don't match
the smile

I've been managed
and distanced
and measured
and my nerves have been
distressed and pulled out
my Mother Bird plucking me
to be groomed

I
am
not sweet

I
am
bitterness
and not wanted...
my
blood is
wormwood green

I only know what its like
to want kindness
and know
something else
and then later
to do all I can to create
the opposite

am I a butterfly
hovering over a raging fire
or am I a mountain lion stalking
or am I a deer hiding in the wood
or am I a hummingbird
hungry for every flower

the owl seeks the night
and knows its great powers
I know I can see through words
straight into the middle
of someone's thoughts

I detect
lies
fears
inconsistencies
frailties
and molecules of yellow light

lonely in the day
lonely in the night
and oh so complicated
but not really

just a child
within a large body
just a child with large
expanding eyes

and a child
who was not one
and a woman who would
be one still
if it weren't for inheritance

odd things
you are,
I am
"an odd thing...."
