Poetic Verses
Too Many Candles On My Cake
On this milestone day of my birth,
when I should feel nothing but mirth;
gasping for air the candles I blew,
lining a cake in rows of two,
so many that caused the cake to flame
That darn number was to blame
Icing dripped on linen and table
Wax and sparks singed Aunt Mable
On this day what happened next,
caused all the guests so much vex
As sparks caught Mable's synthetic wig,
She cried, "oh, mercy" and did a jig
Such steps we haven't seen in years
It moved our Pastor Greene to tears
Without her walker she moved so free
The Pastor dropped down upon his knee
Mable muttered, to the lord don't take her
While Pastor prayed to our maker
As Mable sank daintily back into her chair,
the wig went whirling through the air,
landing in Fluffy's bowl of water
The wig looked like a bathing otter
And Mable breathed a little sigh,
and said she'd rather have some pie
The cake was a melted soggy mess
And pie was served to every guest;
but just as we settled down to eat,
there was a scrambling at our feet
Then the growling did commence
Fluffy dragged that wig out to the fence
As we all gathered by the window to see,
Fluffy buried that wig ‘tween fence and tree
But something shined or glowed in the night
A pair of eyes gleaming bright
Then Fluffy seemed to chase his tail
And we heard him start to wail
Crashing through the doggy door
Came Fluffy and, oh, one more
Chasing ‘round the kitchen table
beneath the billowing skirt of Aunt Mable
Up then down the carpeted stair
And both crouched down beneath my chair
Before we got a look to see,
the creature to bother poor Fluffy;
there came a scent we could not deny,
that brought a tear to my eye
A skunk had sprayed the house so rank
It even awakened uncle Frank
As Frank sat snoozing in his chair,
the party commenced without his care,
until that scent became profound,
from his chair it made him bound,
to the bathroom to check and see
If that scent had come from he
Frank returned with much relief,
as we all stared in disbelief
Dog and skunk under chair posed
As the odor quickly arose
And I gathered up the broom,
to shoo said skunk from the room
Out the doggie door he flew,
with fluffy behind the chase ensued
We looked around in utter shock
The mess before us just to mock,
the toppled table, lamp and chair
All we could do was gasp and stare
My birthday celebration done
Not exactly loads Of fun
Milestone event I won't repeat,
and now surrender to defeat
All this drama I dare to make,
from too many candles on my cake
