 ramblings and things

Lying southeast ofmBlackburn,
Just a few shorty miles  away
There's  a pleasant place to
Spend a most rewarding day.
Pronounced Ozzel Twizzel
This little town of fame
Has an old legend as to how
It acquired  its  odd name.

Old English twistle meant
The meeting of two brooks
And, so the   story goes
St Oswald visited for a look.
The late Raymond  Clarke
Of swinging sixties worth
Is better known as Ossie,
Tribute to his town of birth

Not much happened there until
Eighteen Hundred and Twenty Six
When a gang of troubled workers
Got themselves in a bit of a fix
Rioting against steam looms
A then modern innovation
Causing lowered wages with
Unemployment and starvation.

Oswald's Mill, a Craft Museum
Since its forced closed down
Showing mill life of years ago,
Presenting history of the town.
There's another exhibit which
Is well worth at least a little stop
Stockleys Sweets proudly display
The World's largest ever Pear Drop.

The modern town has developed
It's success now complete
Having Tesco and other Nationals
Trading proudly on the  street.
Visitor's of discernment and taste
Really should take time to enter
The towns thriving cultural scene
The refurbished Civic Arts Centre.

History, Arts and Culture all there
To  pander to many a varied taste
For the selective visitor not a
Second to be classed as waste.
Thus my little ramblings must
Now quickly come to an end
Bring  your family to our town and.
Please, just spend spend spend.
