Thorngumbald

PNothing of note happened in
Thorngumbald  today,
Life just continued on in its
Quiet East Yorkshire way.
It's a pleasant  little village,
Much quieter than most,
Lying on the main road to
Withernsea and the coast.

Past history shows this area
Like so many acres more,
Until William the Conqueror,
Was part of the Danelaw.
This once Viking settlement,
If you can be bothered to look,
Can be  seen recorded as Torn
In the great Domesday Book.

Old English for Thorn Bush,
For many years that was its name
Until Baron Gumbauld moved in
And Torn Gumbauld it became
By stages it changed to that of
The Thorngumbald  of today.
No events of note are recorded
As life just went on it's way

Nowadays a commuter village
Mainly for the City of Hull
Having been so built up
Most residents think it's full.
I've mostly just driven through
But the last time I really went
I was impressed by the atmosphere
Of happiness, peace and content.

All through its long history
Nobody's ever asked why
Life there seemed as exciting
As sitting watching paint dry.
There must have been happenings
But being so obscure had its cost;
The day to  history of village life
Sadly seems to have been lost.
