Chattels - A Prequel

She's the little girl sitting on
My Great Granny's knee,
In one of a box of photos
That she bequeathed to me.
Love child of a wealthy family,
In those days a secret to be kept
Arrangements being  made
Even as that baby slept.
She was boarded out into
My Great Grandparents care
She spent the rest of her
Unmarried life living there.
Once a year she was taken
So  a servant could see
To  confirm she still lived so
They paid the next year's fee.
It was from there she met
The love of her life
Joining him in India
As an NCO's wife.
It was a childless marriage
But I was  the chosen one
I was in away treated
As their surrogate son.
They never seemed to settle
When they arrived back home
Just a series of frequent moves
In a seemingly aimless roam.
The story of her origin
I'm certain is true
But I've no idea if
She herself ever knew.
Did her natural mother know?
I wonder did they ever meet?
Did they ever, just by chance
Pass as strangers on the street.
A story that started in
Queen Victoria's last days
A time of double standard
And even more rigid social ways.
