Revisiting The Past

For sixty years she existed,
Essential during the Cold War,
For twenty five years disbanded
She's been reformed once more.
For nearly forty years she
Operated from this place,
The type of work she did
Needing a static base.

All that time working
In her very secret war
Until the curtain fell and she
Wasn't  needed any more.
The Regiment stood down
With a ceremonial parade:
Now I'm walking around
Where her history was made.

Most of the camp buildings
Are no longer there
You can see the remains
Of the Parade Square.
The Ops Block now a Golf Club,
The aerial field it's Golf course:
Do diners sometime hear
An echo of ghostly morse?

Do the footsteps of a troop echo
Across the once set room floor
As each operator settles down
For another shift in the Cold War?
We worked here as a team
Shed blood sweat and tears
And I'm so very proud to have
A part of a few of those years.

One last wander around this
Important place from my past.
Then and now merge in my mind
And it's time to leave  at last.
There are houses, garages, gardens.
Where our barracks once stood
Such a complete transformation
And to be honest it looks good.
