Pyrrhic Victory

When you've won at the Euro Court
Wiihvalln the validation that affords
Then, for Economic reasons action's it's
Referred  to  and declined by the Lords,
Your victory blown away
Like a pile of ashes
Until it's forgotten
As time passes.
When you've stood on the picket lines
For better conditions, treatment and pay
And then over the years seen
Hard earned rights eroded away.
When you've seen your employer raids
Pension funds to finance a new venture
Which turned into a disastrous
Large loss  making misadventure
And the company Chief Executive
Laughed publicly at the millions lost
Poured scorn and derision about
The confidence that disaster cost.
When you've watched all this happen
And experienced so much more
As gradually they've made toothless
Human rights and employment law:
When you see Scrooge employers
Being subsidised by the State
As employees just can't live
On the minimum wage rate.
You've stood at the counter
And accepted grateful thanks
From near desperate people
Forced into relying on food banks:
When you've seen all this and more
And there's  no rioting on the street
You realise then the state we're in,
How their victory is near complete.
It's so very very tempting
To sit back and wonder why
Try and resist the thought
Of Why the Hell did I try,
Then it's time to accept
This isn't really a defeat
Just an orderly withdrawal
And a tactical retreat.
Time to square the shoulders
Push negative thoughts away
Dripping water wears stone
Tomorrow's a brand  new day.
An individual can't afford justice
As a normal working man,
As a member of a Trades Union
There's more of a chance he can.
