Condemned without a Plea

King Darius was pleased with Daniel
Who had the wherewithal
To interpret haunting mysteries
Of writings on the wall.

Having done so, Darius gave to him
The charge of several men
But the underlings were discontent
And hate led them to sin.

With lies, they coaxed the king to sign
An edict for all to know
That those who held gods over him
Would to the lions' den go.

But Daniel served Almighty God
And ignored the king's decree
Which placed him in that den of lions
Condemned without a plea.

But God sent down an angel
To prevent his being harmed
And when the king became aware
He again was duly charmed.

And granted Daniel pardon
Being found most loyal and true
Because the king once more was pleased
With the man he almost slew.
