 reflections

in the land of the midnight sun

can you hear him weep
the hours passed alone
thinking thoughts that once were
in the land of the midnight sun

he whispers softly into the night
constructing meaning from emotion
weaving memories to be observed
from a deep forgotten ocean

and for every breath he breathes
there’s a smile upon his lips
a distraction from the loneliness
reflecting the abyss

it’s a desperate need for connection
it’s how life on earth began
it’s the secret of the universe
it’s a world with no dry land

it’s the cry of the mournful
of earth’s rejected hell
broken souls joined together
in a hidden ancient realm

the sky is black and charred now
the clouds darkening like sorrow
the saddest sound you’ve ever heard
is the silence of tomorrow

his darkest days are full of hope
in the land of the midnight sun
the brightest white in a sea of red
ash falling down like snow

yet without a soul to share it with
the hours pass alone
thinking thoughts that once were
in the land of the midnight sun
