I'll never forget the way you looked at me that day
your eyes perfectly placed like beautiful little jewels
staring straight into my soul
like you really wanted to know me
you were wearing your blue rainboots
the ones with the white dots on them
and the split in the rubber that let the water in
I remember thinking that it was strange
because it wasn't raining that day
but you said you wanted to feed the ducks
so we ran down that muddy path together
down past the red and white lifebuoy
to the place where the land and sea water meet
there was washing hung outside the lilac house again
nowhere else had I seen five perfect wooden houses
each painted a different colour
like they had their own personality
and even though I never thought about it back then
you always said that you preferred the yellow one
because it was smaller than all the rest
the sky was a brilliant red that morning
and the leaves looked like they were made of glass
I was scared that they might break
you loved the way they curled up at the corners
and how they looked dark blue
you said you had never seen blue leaves before
we climbed down that rusty old ladder
sinking deeper into the blurred fantasy below
a lonely fishing boat cast its net
like a vision of the past
just as the sun cast its final shadow over the earth
and I thought I saw the silhouette of the whale
beautifully presented like an afternoon matinee
I woke up on the grass under the old polymer tree
that's what you always called it
like it was something you would recreate in clay
it bloomed in summer when few other trees did
with delicate pink flowers balanced like teacups
if only life was so easy…
