Beauty Pageant

Andrea brushed her long, beautiful auburn hair with the lovely silver comb her boyfriend had given her. She loved that comb. It was so glittery and sparkly. This dressing room was amazing, too. It had big lights in the shapes of stars, just like a Hollywood movie star's dressing room.

She was competing in the Miss Riverside High beauty pageant, and she was so excited, she could hardly contain herself. It would be amazing to be crowned Miss Riverside High, but she honestly didn't care if she won or not. It was just such an honour to be in the pageant in the first place. And some of her best friends were competing against her. Andrea wasn't a competitive person. She just wanted everyone to be happy.

Her new boyfriend was there too, waiting for her in the audience. She wanted to make him proud. She had done the swimsuit competition, and had looked stunning in her silver suit. Come to think of it, how cool was that. Her silver suit matched the silver comb that Ned had given her. She was crazy about Ned. He was the nicest person, and so caring. She knew he would do anything for her.

Now it was time for the evening gown competition, as well as the talent competition. She was a little nervous, but she had written her own song and was excited to play the grand piano and to sing this song she'd written especially for the beauty pageant. She really wanted to become a singer, and this could be her ticket to such a glamorous career.

She had fallen in love with her evening gown the moment she first saw it in the store. Ned took one look at her in it and said, “Oh, Andrea, that's the one. You. Look. Breathtaking.”

It took some nerve to wear a red dress in an evening gown competition, but she had taken one look at herself in it and she knew that Ned was right. This was the dress. It was perfect!
She put a red carnation in her hair. Oh my god, she thought. It matches the dress perfectly!! She didn't think that things could be more perfect than they were at that moment.

She got up the courage to walk out to the stage with confidence. She sat down at the beautiful silver grand piano, stretched out her hands and played the most eloquent song anyone had ever heard. She sang the words as though her very life depended on it. Even the high notes were perfect. She couldn't believe how everything was falling into place.

The audience roared with love for her. They even gave her an encore, so she played another new song she had just written. They loved it. Andrea was overjoyed.

Her boyfriend sat in the audience, overwhelmed with his love for her. She was definitely the one.

When she and her competitors were lined up to announce the winner, they were all smiles. But each girl knew in her heart of hearts that Andrea was the best candidate. She was beautiful, smart, kind and talented.

The judges all smiled at each other, and the school principal, Mr. Preston, made his way to center stage.

“Every year, we have the most amazing young ladies,” he said, “and every year, we seem to find someone even more amazing than the year before. This year, the Miss Riverside High beauty pageant award goes to… Andrea Rivera!” He placed the delicate silver tiara on her head. The diamonds glistened under the spotlights.

Andrea smiled, laughed and cried. She couldn't believe it!

Ned stood up and applauded, and the rest of the crowd followed suit. Andrea had never been so happy in her life. The cameras snapped her picture; flashes lit up the entire auditorium.

When it was her time to speak, she said, “I couldn't have done this without my boyfriend Ned. He's my rock. We've been dating a month today, so happy anniversary, Ned! I love you!”

Ned smiled and waved, and he wiped away a single tear. “I love you too!” he called out. Everyone laughed.

After the excitement had died down a bit, someone from a record company approached Andrea.

“Hey there, Andrea,” said the man. “I'm Jonas Arbuckle. From Jungle Records. We love your sound. We think you have what it takes to make a groundbreaking record. What do you say?”

Andrea was speechless. She fanned herself with the roses that Mr. Preston had given her. When she could finally talk, she said, “Thank you so much, Mr. Arbuckle. This is a dream come true!”

They signed a record deal, and she already knew what songs she would include on the label.

Finally, Ned came up to her. “Congratulations, my queen,” he said. She kissed him, and they made their way to a fancy restaurant, where everything glittered just for them.
