Martina and Kim

Chapter 1

Martina's mom asked today if she would like to go to a new park. It was a park they had never been to before, and Martina was excited. She loved meeting new friends.

Martina was a mixed kid. Her mom was white, and her father had been Black. She had never known her father.

"That sounds like a great idea!" exclaimed Martina.

What should she wear? How did her hair look? She looked in the mirror on the wall and admired her own beauty. Gosh, she was a beautiful child. She loved looking in the mirror. Then she picked up her pretty teal hand-held mirror and made kissy faces and surprised faces in it. She raised her eyebrows and then lowered them as quickly as she could and made funny faces.

Just then, her mom walked up to Martina's bedroom door. "Looking good!" her mom laughed and handed her the family basketball. "We're gonna have fun today!"

Martina smiled her Colgate smile and looked at her cute dimples in her teal mirror. She couldn't get enough of looking in the mirror.

"Time it is a-wastin'," said her mom as she gently took the mirror out of her daughter's hands and put it on Martina's dresser.

"Aw, Mom," said Martina. But she was laughing.

They gathered picnic stuff, toys and games to play at the park.

"I can't wait to meet some new friends!" said Martina.

Her mom smiled.

They headed out to the car and got ready to go. Martina started singing out loud:  "You Are My Sunshine," and her mom sang along. Then they started singing it as a round. Then they sang other songs they loved. It was going to be an awesome day!

Chapter 2

"Oh my word, this is the coolest park ever!" Martina exclaimed as they arrived at the park.

"I have to agree, my dear," smiled her mom.

They put their things down on a picnic table and looked around for a minute. This park was amazing. It was so… new! It had lots of playground equipment and as they looked across the way, it was actually a double park! It had swings and slides everywhere! Baby swings, monkey bars, cool stuff they'd never seen before! This park rocked!!

And there were kids everywhere ~ babies, little bitty kids, kids Martina's age… even teenagers. Everyone was happy and playing together nicely. Mom had definitely picked a great park, thought Martina.

She picked up the basketball and started dribbling it. Some other kids joined her at the basketball court and started playing. Martina was so excited!

She was a homeschooled kid, so sometimes it was difficult to find new friends. Everyone else was at school when she was at home, racking her brain to study alone. She liked to learn, but sometimes she missed having other kids around. Her mom was a single mom and there were no little sisters or brothers running around at home. She loved her mom, but there was so much out there that Martina was missing out on.

Martina's mom sat at the picnic table, watching the kids play. She was so happy for Martina.

She wanted Martina to be happy, and she knew that Martina really wanted to have little siblings at home. Like her daughter, Martina's mom wanted more children in their family. But finding a good partner was easier said than done. They had both been hurt before, and Martina's mom vowed that she would never let that happen again.

She noticed that Martina was making friends quickly, but there were quite a few. She hoped that her daughter would pick one or two good friends and that they could become forever friends.

Martina made another basket.

"I'm on fire today!!" she said to her friends. They all laughed, and someone stole the basketball from her. This girl was taller than she was, and ran over to the other basket. Slam dunk!

Martina laughed. "Wow, that was a great shot!" she said. "I double dog dare ya to do it again!"

Some of the other kids left to play on swings and slides. But this girl stayed. She and Martina were fast friends.

"What's your name?" Martina asked the other girl when they took a quick water break.

"Kim," replied the tall girl. Her hair was this golden color, and it was straggly like she never brushed it. But she was great at basketball! And they had fun together.

Kim passed the ball to Martina, and Martina dribbled it while she ran up to the hoop. She did one of those flying things she'd seen on tv, jumping into the air and trying to do a slam dunk.

She missed.

They both laughed like it was the funniest thing that had ever happened.

Martina was a little disappointed. But Kim was awesome. So they kept playing. Kim even helped her with some tricky shots. Martina was excited to have made a new friend.

"Will you be here tomorrow?" asked Martina.

"Yeah," said Kim, wiping the sweat off her forehead. "My mom brings me here every day after school."

"That's so cool!' said Martina.

Martina's mom heard everything and made a mental note.

Martina looked up at her mom, and her mom gave her a thumbs up and a big cheesy smile.

"I'm so thirsty," said Martina. Her water bottle was empty.

"Here," said her new friend, handing her a blue Powerade ~ her favorite flavor.

"Hey, thanks!" said Martina. This was the mark of a true friend.

I will keep this bottle forever, she thought. She looked down at her shirt. It was her rainbow unicorn shirt. This is my new lucky shirt, she thought. I will hide it so Mom can never wash it again!

"Kim!" came the dreaded call of Kim's mom.

"Yeah," Kim replied.

"Time to go home for supper," said Kim's mom.

"Aww!" said Kim, but she gathered her things and prepared to go home.

Martina looked at her own mom, who smiled knowingly.

"I'll see you tomorrow," said Martina.

"Yay!" exclaimed her new friend. "I can't wait!!"

To Martina's mom's surprise, her daughter wasn't that bummed out when Kim left. Instead, she shot a few hoops happily alone. Then some other kids started to come back to the basketball court to play the game with her. She was making friends left and right!

This is what life is all about, thought Martina. Making friends and chillin. She smiled to herself, and her new friends smiled back.

One girl asked if she wanted to go back over to the big slide, so Martina asked her mom.

Martina's mom got their stuff together and camped out closer to the big slide and the swings.

But there was this cool tunnel to climb through, so Martina started climbing on it. Her mom was reading a book now, but always paying attention. Her mom was awesome. She minded her own business but was always there if Martina needed her.
