 reflections

under the bridge

she’s a beauty
a mystery that he’d like to explore
woven through the fabric of time
like the remnant of a secret and magical world
that’s dying to be shared
and who knows
whether he will be a wise man or a fool
for that which is done
cannot now be changed
and what was once a possibility
was left long ago
in that long-suffering air

they say there’s a place
concealed by shallow stone
where the past and the present will continue
a single moment captured in an image
that flows out from her to him
a reflection
that brings a sense of calm and fracture
to a familiar scene
whilst gentle ripples
rendered out of focus
float under the bridge like birds swimming
through the sand of an hour glass

alone they peer into the depths of the water
their history bound up so tight
that it’s difficult to think of them separately
thoughts of what once was
hidden under elliptical arches
that stretch out wider than a memory
and above all of this it’s hard to overstate
just how imposing and overwhelming it is
so they stand and look up under the new sun
unmoved
and with a sense that without it
they would never even have existed at all
