 reflections

left behind

lately I’ve been feeling left behind
where do you go when you’re not here?
on those mornings I wake to find you gone
or those nights you drift away like a shadow
hidden under the perfect light of the moon
and I'm left counting down the seconds
until I see you again

there's a far-off shoreline I never knew existed
is it better on the other side?
does it make you happy?
I feel like a lonely bird nestled on the surface
the last survivor stranded in the sparkling sun
distant pools now uncovered
like secret unmet needs

I watch you until you disappear out of sight
wet sand stretched out like a canvas
where you once lapped lazily
seemingly unmoved by the motion of the tides
and I can still hear your voice on the horizon
like a forgotten tapestry in a sea of stars
each one as different as it is precious

when you're near
I can feel your heart against mine
like a warm blanket on a cold night
the regular rise and fall of your breath
up over the shore and back again
just a low whisper dancing on the waves
a ripple on the lips of a seashell

and no matter how many times you go away
there's nothing more beautiful
than the way you kiss me when you return
and even though we never stay together
you carry me where the light can not
two sets of footprints the only reminder
of the love we left behind
