Transitions

Set in thar period before
The Wall came down
Set loose in Germany
A small garrison town
Three young squaddies
Eyes on the ball
Yorkie likely lads who
Thought they knew it all
The Frauliens were beautiful
The beer clear and strong
Liaisons were attempted
Before very long

A welcoming little village
A very pleasant place
Just a short country walk
Not too far from the base
For most of the regiment
That walk was too far
And so it became our
Own special little bar.
As part of the community
Accepted liked and trusted
For three short years there
We drank smoked and lusted.

When that posting ended
And it came time to part
The folk of that village kept
A special place in my heart.
This was the place where
The important ending began
Completing my transition from
The teenager to the man.
Nearly fifty years later
With a tear in my eye
The shell returned briefly
To say thanks and goodbye
