I'd Like To Be Your Shirt (when you wake up in the morning)

********

I'd like to be your shirt
that new one
that soft one
when you wake up in the morning
and you think of that velvety feeling
and how, when  it touches your skin
you let that touch be my chin
and my fingertips knead
into the corners of your/my/our smiles
as my nose nuzzles where your heart lives

I'd like to be your shirt
the one you reach for in the morning
that one that makes you feel comfortable
the one that helps you feel your best
the one that will soon smell like you
more than all the rest
I'd like to be worn and rarely washed
and a welcome comfort
even when I tear and rend and need
mending
yet you think I'm enough
and you decide you like the holes and stains
because it reminds you of the times
I was near

I would like to be your shirt
the one you left unfolded in the drawer
or quietly waiting even when you've dropped me
to the bedroom floor
because I know
I'm comfortable in the knowledge you'll pick me up
and I'll smell you
and I'll memorize you
even more and more.
