Our Mighty River

Now spanned by her bridge
Gracefully curving the air,
A politicians' prank once
Dubbed Road to Nowhere,
She's an estuarial river,
Fast and very  wide
That can  threaten the City
With her Spring Tide
Or, when onshore  storm  wind
Holds tidal waters back,
Breach barriers that can't always
Withstand such attack.
Most times it's  fine but
Sometimes it's close and able
To top them and cause flood
Helped  by our  high water table.

We are a maritime City
Built on reclaimed  flood plains
Used to high waters through
Outdated overloaded  drains.
Majestic on a summers day
A real sight to be seen
Flowing fast to the North Sea
A burnished wide silver sheen.
A confluence of rivers flowing
From the moors wolds and dales
A spectacular sight when
She's whipped along by the gales.
She's treacherous and dangerous
And many a Master's given thanks
For skilled Humber Pilot's steerage
Through shifting channels and banks.

Our River Humber once taking fleets,
Whaling, trawling, deep sea trade,
Building up the hardy character
Of which our citizens are made.
We are a city built on water
For better or worse, bad or good
The steady flowing of our river is like
A  heart pumping out our city's life blood
A City that at times has
Seen its ambitions shattered
Beaten down but never beaten
A historic city, bombed, battered,
Entering the twenty first century as if
Newly wakened from its long slumber
Split by the tidal river Hull, standing
On the banks of the mighty Humber.
