Dusk came as it always did, hazy with an authentic mist
The sudden drop in temperature was always noticeable
A chill, a shudder a slight unseen, unknown shiver
Eyes that had got used to the darkness now squint
Making out shadows of beings that are not there
The sound of muffled voices and cracking open fires
The stench of men and sodden excrement
Roasted meat and spilt ale, gives flavour to the air
As darkness comes and the fires quieten
The shadows dance wildly and became energetic
Thoughts seem to manifest themselves
And fear rears its ugly head and gaze eagerly
Fatigue grips like a constricting snake
As the legs wabble and the eyes shut
A moments respite seems like years
Until a creature’s sound awakes that solitude
And your back waiting, looking, searching
For the break of light in the sky, that is twilight
And you become a sentinel no more
