This Is What Mermaids Dream Of

********

we've never met

yet your outline is sketched
into my memory
snoring in a bedroom near the ocean
where sea rocks meet the surf
and crash against the shore

I hear your restlessness
as you toss-turn in dreams

my blue-green mind caresses
you from the deep
I am Poseidon's Daughter
humming my songs hypnotic
the notes forming a snare
catching all who would listen
down into the skin crevices of the deep

I've never met you
yet my eyes have traced your eyes in the dark
I believe that
I see you see me unblinking

Have you as I have
wished for this
to be known
to be human and
buffered within the berth of your wide shoulders
even though I have sacrificed my tongue

This is how a mermaid dreams
when she loses her legs
and is left with the disappointment
of that large indifferent
vestigial tail
