Priere du matin d'hiver

(Winter morning Prayer)

In frigid early mornings
when cutting a simple cross
into a single can of pet food
the stench calls cats to breakfast.

Accept this daily office of these hours
I warm the walls of our home.
My breath lights life into what
is left of last night's darkness.

Kids sleep nearest an electric fire.
Winter is when I do my best work.
I will carry you through January and February.
You can cool me when July and August come.

Fresh baked bread, coffee with cream
stirring them when the time is just right.
