Saudade: the feeling of wanting to be near someone who is far and distant

she must have swum the shoreline
til it was memorized

she must have counted
every starfish
every pebble
every shell
every change in the sea

she must have had
a thousand pointed thoughts
that pierced her heart
until they became one thought
it was SIMPLY all that she could think

she must have wondered
what would it be like to be a human being
she must have thought:
I know who I am
but what might  he be to me

she may have rued her tail
and wished for dangling shapely legs
and how to change her situation

she'd have to consider the distances
which would mean the loss of all who she knew
and how truly far those legs would take her away

saudade is a misery
a lonely place to be caught swimming
it zaps the soul
it sinks into the flesh of a tender heart
its a sting of a wasting woe and dismay

the mermaid whose hope grew only thinner
as her want grew larger every day
each thought and each hour
she thinking more the thoughts
that wise others would delay

for love
the little mermaid girl
gave it all away...................
