You Do As You Please 8/17/2005 found poem, readjusted 6/20/22
my changes were saved
in a notebook
I wrote them down
so I could remember to tell you
exactly how far I've come
it doesn't seem to matter
though
you see me as arthritic
irascible
unable to bend to touch my toes
what if I were once a rose
in bloom
and now the petals were falling
the stem wilting
my resolve in decay
why do some people put love away
and forget to tell the other person
they're no longer valuable
a worn out shoe for a body
and a face which holds no charm
I hug myself into a heart-shape at night
laying my face on a soft blanket
pretending its you
when you used to see me
as a shiny dime or penny
the years cannot be called back
the tears water the garden
though I have none
if I were to stand naked before you
in the snow
would you bring me a blanket
or simply close the door
and let me freeze?
I see now
you do as you please.
