The ghost within.

A memory in place
Just so, deliberate
Upon a mantle shelf
Inside a house
Aging and derelict.

A picture blurred
With features faded
In hand a doll held
With innocence alluded

Hand held out
Alone in a field
Where nothing grows
That ever yields.

A past destined to revisit
With a man's inheritance
Looking at confusedly
Of a moment captured

A trick to the eye
Or is memory at play?
For he sees the child move
Is it coming his way?

His focus consumed
All else is peripheral
Unnoticed, a darkening
Of all about him

Warmth turns to a chill
As an invading presence
Without permission
Comes a loathing, intense.

Secure this is fantasy
Yet retreating away
Falling backwards
Though eyes don't sway.

As if at a window
Pausing to stare
A moment of sadness
Turns to a glare.

As an emergence
Of a child born
Ghostly silent
Falls to the floor.

Pulling upon the man
Deliberate yet clumsy
Heaves this creature
Of wheezing hideosity.

Eyes locked in a still dance
Prone to the weighted ghost
The man inhales to scream
Drawing it down his throat.

Echoing around his mind
A child's accusation
You left me YOU LEFT ME
Shattering all oblivion.

Behind a stare wide open
Crowd the memories lost
All vying to be remembered
Till his wall is demolished.

A light dawn's in a mind
As a sun spreads over land
With a new grasp of life
Finds a doll in his hand.

Now upon a mantle shelf
A photo of a field empty
Reawakened is the boy
That died from memory.
