The Straight Story (What Happens When The Writer Inserts You Into Her Story)

****************************************

a heart made of wind
inconstant yet always seeking
you've  startled an entire herd of horses
all fillies
with your wild wilful heart
so changeable and unfocused

I'm now the ghost
keeping company with the Great Spirit
I'm no longer an angel
the one you once claimed as
"yours"

those who ARE pedantic
often argue with the writer
and make their views the dominant narrative
but that's your story
this is my story
the straight one

my advice to you is:

not to annoy the writer
as she may put you in some badly written
over-wrought mystery
and kill you off
in the first chapter
readily justifying this as
a necessary literary device deployed
for her own survival

I never got the straight story from you
"never" being a very harsh mistress of a word
but I'm the editor
and this is my poem

I could describe you as:
quick to be wronged
last to forgive
intent upon the sanctity of your truths
I'm no longer seated in your pub
I'm giving you back your booth, Sir
someone else can goo and gah over you
and your lightning wit and charms

there are a thousand-thousand girls
with my name where you are
wanting your friendship
and the smile of your beautiful face
to shine upon them

they might be
whiffing at your money
and wanting to be the nest new It Girl
I wasn't a contender
I'm aware
it'll be easy for me to be replaced

not even one distant thought or word from you
can remind me of the kindnesses
you now sorely lack

you traded friendship for
threats and judgment ,Sir
one day
I believe
you'll get your lumps

and I won't be there to be kind to you
and yet the Great Spirit
reminds me
I cared once about you
and might still ought to treat you well

but I'm not that angel
I'm the one you fashioned
out of the malleable clay stories,
the kind you like to tell and sell.
