A Father's Farewell
One cold and clear October eve,
we gathered for a wake.
Our father passed three nights before
and left a deep heartache.
I walked out on the balcony
to find some solitude.
The sky was filled with stars that night,
which mollified my mood.
As I stood, looking toward the stars,
one arced across the sky.
I took that sign to be my father
waving his "Goodbye!"
It's said that someone's star blinks out
on the day that person dies.
I believe my father's "Farewell" star
was meant for just my eyes.
