 ramblings and things

smallstepsmadpotepotriemantheartfulcodgerscogspeaksvolumes
By military standards
It was a heinous crime
Worthy of a pay cut
Or even doing time,
So you fought for a mate
You really had to try
For there but for fortune
Could go you or I.

You’re lying Corporal
The Sergeant Major said.
I tried not to blink,
Looked straight ahead.
Of course I was lying
That’s what you do
To save a mate and
The Sergeant Major knew.

You don’t get to his rank
Without knowing the tricks
And the things people try
To get out of a fix.
So you lie like a trooper
Stick rigidly to your tale
It’s in the hands of the gods
Whether you win or fail.

For in the barmy army game
Sometimes you dared and won
And sometimes you did that by
The outrageous tales you spun..
For for you  knew and they knew
But if you stubbornly stuck it out
For some strange reason they could
Give you the benefit of the doubt.

For a Regiment is just a big family
With its white and its black sheep,
And within that big family
Loyalties and feelings run deep.
They'll beast you amd test you,
Listen as you whinge and moan,
But when push comes to shove
You're still one of their own.
