Musings by The Poet Loriet

You Made Me Smile

I've been so sad,
crying, not sleeping,
not wanting to eat...
I didn't want to smile,
wanted the sun to stop shining,
wanted the flowers to all die,
wanted laughter to stop flowing.

But you made me smile
through my tears.
How do you always know
the perfect words to say?
How do you know how
to coax a frown into
turning upside down?

I'm stubborn, sweetheart,
but you're sweeter than
I am stubborn.

How could my face not glow
when you told me that
I was a wonderful gift,
that men didn't understand
my heart only because
it was so pure, so real,
that men were used to
conditions and my heart
was offered freely.

I like that thought,
that I bewilder men
with kindness...
Maybe it's not true,
maybe I really am
unlovable...

but you made me smile,
made me feel special
once again because
you are magic.

You let me borrow your hope
when I'd lost all of mine,
because that's what friends are for.
