Musings by The Poet Loriet

Man Enough

You were a big man,
offering to kick his ass
for getting involved,
a real tough guy.

Yes, he got involved.
He was feeling protective
of me, and while all
you could do is yell
and berate and sneer
at me for crying,
he was man enough
to listen and help
me make those tears
disappear.

You created them.
You weren't sorry,
told me I would never
get an apology from you.
I got one from him though.
He was sorry I ever met you,
sorry you had hurt me,
sorry he couldn't hold me,
sorry he ever thought
you might be good for me.

He was the one man enough
to call me and say,
"Hold on, baby girl until
you hear my voice again.
I'm never too far away,
I'll be there soon, do
whatever I can...
Don't give up, honey.
Somebody loves you."

He was man enough...
You with your mad words,
your accusations, your
threats, your probing
questions...
did not impress me.
I hope it made you
feel important,
because to me, it
just made you
even more of a jerk.

I knew...
it was over then,
because man enough means
you stay and deal with
the tears you create.
That's the tough job,
the one that separates
the men from the boys.

I won't settle
for anything less.
