Once was Told 2/25/02

once was told that the good die young
and the young die best

once was told that the sun wakes in the east
but rest in the west
once was told that just because it glitters that doesn't mean it's gold
once was told that blacks don't deserve to die happy or old
once was told that my land could be sold or stole right from beneath my feet
once was told that my forefathers were cowards with no backbone
once was told never bite the hand that feeds and buys you clothes
once was told that the path of the righteous isn't an easy road
once was told if I pray daily my earthly life would multiply by tenfold
once was told I wouldn't amount to anything more than coal
once was told you don't know what you have until you don't have it anymore
once was told no matter how bad the climate becomes always weather the storm
once was told beauty is only skin deep
once was told beautiful women are the ones that will wound you deeply
once was told that love conquers all
once was told if I fall to get back up and stand tall
once was told that large things come in small packages
once was told never walk in the valley of the shadows of death by yourself
once was told dreams are what life is made of
once was told that people with thin skin should
not poke fun
once was told women will always be here
once was told that you can't change a hoe to a housewife
once was told that a housewife could be changed to a hoe
once was told the sky is blue,
fire is hot,
and water is wet

once was told that everyone is promised death
once was told cowards die a thousand deaths
once was told in the end good will destroy evil
once was told when you deal with the soul there is no color
once was told marijuana causes a person to forget a lot
once was told that pac and big died from intricate plots
once was why gun stores and liquor stores frequent the same block
once was told sex and violence sells
once was told it isn't hard to damn your soul to hell
once was told that the meek would inherit the earth
but there is one more thing that I heard;

what the eyes see
and the ears hear
the mind believes,
so don't always conceive what you read!
