One day, two birds became aware of each other.
A male and a female.
Both birds were strong, intelligent, kind.
The male had greater strength.
The female was small enough to
nestle between two rocks
beneath the branch of
a large, aged cedar tree.
Enough food and rain were provided
and she was contented.
She had many friends who visited
but none she cared to fly away with.
In her culture, she had been trained
to rely on a male bird to lead her
throughout her life to safety.
Females never approached a male first.
She patiently awaited the day he would arrive.
Sadly, she had lost her ability to sing.
The male was from a different culture
and unaware of why the beautiful bird
nestled between the rocks seemed to ignore him.
He remained perched on a branch
where they could see each other.
Something about this bird
happily nestled between the rocks
intrigued him.
In his culture, however, it was unacceptable behavior
for a male bird to approach a female bird
unless she first sang The Song of Invitation.
Daily he sang his brightest songs to no avail.
Her heart sunk each time he flew away.
She also felt drawn to him.
Everyday he would return and
send his mystical melodies
into the distant future.
He never knew how wonderfully happy
he made the silent little bird.
His heart wasn't up for it
but he offered his song,
one last time,
from the branch of the tree
giving shade to the two empty rocks below.
He hoped with all of his heart
that his song would find it's way
to the bird he would eternally long for.
