Musings by The Poet Loriet

Smiles

"Smiles," I giggled,
"because there's a mile
between the esses!"

You groaned at
my corniness,
but that's what
you give me,
long-lasting
smiles.

I grinned wide
when I heard
your voice
tonight,
waking me up,
"Baby, when did
you get home...
I missed you!
When can I
see you?"

It's so damn nice
to be missed by
someone like you,
to come home to
your laughter and
your friendship.

I missed you too,
in spite of your jokes,
your queries
about the "handsome men"
I picked up on vacation.

Our feelings are an
understatement, but
without being said,
I know you care.

And right now,
that's enough,
a small comfort,
a glimmer of hope.
I'm truly not ready
for more than that.

We'll take it slow
and keep trying
to make each other
smile for miles--

and miles.
