Musings by The Poet Loriet
Contextual Clues
You trodded ever so slowly
onto my top step, avoiding
the emotional goodbye,
traces of puffy redness
lingering around your
hollow eyes.
I touched your sleeve.
You turned around and
looked into my eyes.
I whispered, "Come here,"
my eyes conveying empathy,
and you stepped back up
and crashed into
my tight embrace.
Funny how a touch
can say so much.
Your body shuddered
and relaxed into mine
as I felt innumerable
tensions melt away and
you sighed into me
for one delicious
comforting moment
for us both.
You whispered, "thank you,"
as your lips brushed mine
for a fraction of a second
and then you looked away,
but you had something in
your face that hadn't
been there before--
a moist teardrop clung to
your dark eyelashes and
a hint of a smile played
on the corners of your lips.
It will all be okay.
I meant what I said,
the words inherent
in my embrace.
I am here.
Take your time.
I know your pain.
I understand.
Words aren't
necessary
among friends.
