Musings by The Poet Loriet
Apparitions
Your ghost rattles her chains
every time you hold my hand,
share a laugh, brush my lips
with an innocent kiss.
She knows when you're happy
and sucks every drop of it
away from your soul.
She is a powerful poltergeist.
She moves you, leaves me
helpless to defend you.
You cry devastated in dark tombs
and I, once again, am unseen, unknown.
I am touching your skin but
do not quite reach you because
she howls and wraps her chains
tighter around your wounded heart.
And you cry...
Oh, baby, you cry--
She won't let you come near me.
She's so good, so damn good
at drowning you in despair,
pulling you into her rip tide
and tugging you under
to the mud depths where
you are sucked into
complete darkness.
I'll never reach your
haunted heart, though I
stand still as a lighthouse
beaming at you with open arms.
You brush past blind to everything
but answering her foghorn call.
"I still love her,"
you wail on MY shouldering banks.
"I shouldn't tell you this.
I know you have feelings
for me too," but anon, my dear,
they erode away one grain of
sand at a time as you
brush me off.
I pat your back, "Shhhhhhh...
I know. I know. I know,"
realizing again how anonymous
my arms are, how I don't matter.
Choking back my tears, I wish
for a good exorcist so
I could climb inside you,
let you know I'm here too...
if you'd only give me
a ghost of a chance.
