A kidney...
one of a pair of organs
that filters body fluids.
Everyone has a pair.
They are easy to forget,
to take for granted...
until they don't work.
I know a pair of kidneys
that refuse to work.
They belong to a
thirteen year old girl,
full of life and spirit.
She has dark hair
like her daddy and
intense eyes full of spark.
She's a very smart girl,
loves animals and spends summers
as a junior zoo-keeper
tending her flock.
I'm told she plays a mean saxophone
when her daddy says,
"Come on, baby.
Jazz me up tonight!"
She's a writer too,
(just like her daddy).
She loves seafood~lobster and crab
and can eat hot sauce with the
toughest of men.
She hates being sick,
hates being different,
the way the medications
make her face swell up when
she just wants to be a
teenage girl and
do teenage girly things.
She screams, "I hate you!"
at those she loves most
when she really means,
"Hold me, love me anyways.
I'm scared", but she's at
*that age*!
Lately, she's been hearing more
about transplants and dialysis
and kidney failure than she has
about the cute boy in Algebra
or Susie's new haircut or
the newest fashion must.
She's got a fighting spirit
that makes you cheer for her.
Such a beautiful girl!
Such a young girl...
And now when I think
about kidneys, I
think about her
and pray for
miracles.
She deserves a miracle,
a chance to grow,
a chance to dream.
She deserves
