Tony and I drove a few miles
without speaking.
The rain had stopped.
It was around 3:00 am.
I should have been home
a long time ago.
I thought about calling
my babysitter.
I stopped on the
side of the highway.
Tony: "Is everything alright?"
Cynthia: "I have to call my babysitter."
Tony: "You have kids?"
Cynthia: "Yes, I have three
beautiful children."
Tony: "Aren't you afraid you
are going to wake them?"
Cynthia: "My house is fairly big,
they wouldn't be able to
hear the phone."
I rummaged through my purse
looking for the cell phone.
Cynthia: "Damn it, it's not here."
Tony: "I have a phone you can use."
Cynthia: "I don't mean to be a bother."
Tony: "It's ok, I know
you're worried."
Cynthia: "Thanks."
Tony: "No problem."
Phone rings at the house.
The babysitter is laying
on the couch half asleep.
She picks up the phone.
Babysitter: "Hello?"
Cynthia: "It's just me."
Babysitter: "Where are you?"
Cynthia: "I left the party a little late,
I'm on my home."
Babysitter: "I was worried something might
have happened to you."
Cynthia: "No, I'm okay."
Babysitter: "Everything is okay here."
Cynthia: "I'll be home shortly."
Babysitter: "Okay."
Cynthia: "Bye."
Babysitter: "Bye."
The babysitter hangs up the
phone and dozes off to sleep.
