Words and Verse

Sonnet

The expectations of a sonnet-
That it must have lines of five feet,
Have one right rhyme-scheme laid upon it
And have some weighty, serious meat,
Are hogwash! Lies!  and weightless spittle.
Just look! Here in this poem's middle
You'll find two couplet's - odd but true
(And huddled, unheroic too).
And here's a quatrain's form inverted
Two females, with two males between.
Ugh! Such a foursome! Sick! Unseen!
But no, this isn't form preverted,
And if you'd rather do without it,
It's done! So make no bones about it.
