She knelt before me
on one knobby
little girl knee
and took my hand
in her petite one,
dirt under a couple
small fingernails
(Lord knows I try!)
and chipped pink polish-
She knelt before me
with a shy smile,
eager to make
a dramatic impact.
With shining eyes,
she placed a tiny
white jewelry box
in the palm of my hand.
I opened it slowly
as she said,
"Will you be my mommy,
forever and ever
til death do us part
and even after death,
will you be my angel
and protect and love me
always and forever?"
I said,"Of course, honey!"
and pulled out my
brand new gem-studded
one dollar toe ring
she bought at the gift shop
on her school field trip.
"Thank you, sweetheart!,"
I told her as I swept
her into a tight hug.
"Mommy will wear this
all the time and
think about you.
I'll always keep
my promises."

my little drama queen
as sweet as she is...
