Musings by The Poet Loriet

Answer to Your Anthem

You do not shimmer.
You do not shine.
You do not radiate,
though you are capable.
I've seen glimpses.

You've ceased to live,
shut yourself off from love.
You are filled with hate,
especially for yourself.

If that song is your church,
you have not been faithful
in your attendance.

Love, life, shimmering
are a choice that
only you can make.
I thought you had.
But it was only
a religious holiday
where you wore your
best suit and acted
like a hypocrite.

In my religion,
we call people like that
"Cafeteria Catholics".
Love is hard work,
and it takes more
than one follower.
Dessert off the buffet line
gives you a quick high,
but leaves you weary and hurt.

I stood there holding your tray,
piled high with summer peaches
and lots of greens, tender meat
and home-cooked potatos,
but you knocked it on the floor.

I went hungry to feed you.
Now, we're both starving.
And radiant...
is just another word
in my dog-eared
dictionary.
