Our Hope

Lamentations 3

My soul claims our Lord is my inheritance,
For He is the reason for our existence;
Into Him I'll put all of my faith and hope,
For our Heavenly Father helps me to cope;
Is there an alternative to hope and trust?
It is despair which leaves you in disgust;
Wilberforce said in 1801 he dare not marry,
Because the future was just too darn scary;
William Penn in 1806 said there is naught,
Except for ruin and despair ready to rot;
In 1848 Lord Shaftsbury said no can save,
The British Empire from a watery grave;
Benjamin Disraeli in 1849 said that no hope,
Industry and commerce are beyond scope;
In 1852 the Duke of Wellington had said,
He would be spared seeing the ruin ahead;
Lord Grey in 1914 said the lamps going out,
Seeing light again in Europe he does doubt;
What a shame for famous people in despair,
No prayers to God for hope that he'll share.
